A new wireless Internet provider announced that it has begun service in parts of Baltimore - the latest company offering an alternative to broadband service over cable or phone lines.

Believe Wireless serves an area that includes Canton, Fells Point, Little Italy and South Baltimore. In about a month, it expects to expand farther into the city and neighboring areas of Baltimore County, said President Paul J. Dowling Jr. Believe is an offshoot of Skyline Network Technologies Inc., a Web software company.

Believe's fees are $30 to $50 a month for residential service, depending on speed. Business connections, similar to T-1 service, cost about $200 a month.
